Egg freezing means, in a sense, stopping aging in terms of having children.
In today's modern life, the average age of marriage for women is higher than in the past. The desire to advance in education and career is one of the reasons for this situation. On the other hand, the most important criterion that determines the chance of having a child is the woman's age. As age increases, the rate of abnormalities in egg chromosomes increases, and therefore, proportionally, we encounter fewer pregnancies, more miscarriages and increased abnormalities such as Down syndrome. Egg freezing means, in a sense, stopping aging in terms of having children.
In the last few years, thanks to a change in regulation, we have been able to freeze the eggs of single women who want to postpone marriage and pregnancy. Another group of women who benefit from this method are women who are scheduled for surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy due to cancer or similar health reasons. In this group, the eggs of single women are frozen without wasting time before the planned treatments and then the planned surgeries or treatments are performed.
How does the treatment process progress?
After the necessary evaluation and preparation, just like in IVF treatments, we start using ovarian stimulating injections at the beginning of the period. It is necessary to see our patient 3-4 times in a period of approximately 10 days. When the egg sacs (follicles) reach a certain size and the blood hormone values become suitable, maturation injections are applied. The next stage is egg collection. The collection process is a short procedure performed with light anesthesia, and our patient can go home a few hours after the procedure. The eggs obtained are evaluated and the quality and mature ones are frozen and the process is completed.
There are some important points in terms of giving us confidence in the future use of egg freezing. While we find fewer eggs sufficient in a young woman, we may find it necessary to perform egg collection more than once in older women with reduced ovarian reserve.
Of course, our wish is for our patients to conceive naturally and give birth to healthy babies without needing the eggs we freeze in the future. In other words, there is no rule that every woman who freezes eggs will need those eggs to have children in the future. However, if necessary, the eggs we freeze are worth their weight in gold.
